Keep calm and carry on

by Jack Target

Stress. It can be a very nasty thing. Personally it makes me very uncomfortable. Not just to be stressed, but to see other people stressed, running around hysterically with dread in their eyes and the weight of the world on their shoulders. As Austin Powers once said “it’s not my bag baby”.

The reason I talk about stress of all things, is because I have seen a lot of it recently. As an editor of this fine publication there is added pressure to get everything organised and make sure everyone knows where they stand.

I also see this from the other editors. I understand that everyone is under pressure and this is our time to shine, but doesn’t stress hinder our performance?

I understand some people feel they need to stress and worry, for them to be kept on their toes so they can get the work done. But it must be very tiring. I couldn’t do it. I tend to be very laid back you see. Some people say if I was any more laid back I would be falling over.

I take this approach to everything in life. Because I feel the more you stress and get your metaphorical knickers in a twist (literally getting them in a twist would be most uncomfortable and difficult to do) the harder things get. Your mind goes into overdrive and you might as well just spin on the spot shouting random requests out. It is no use to anyone.

Acronyms

Now I know some of you will be clicking on this blog expecting to see me talk about sport and in particular UAL sports. But if you are already on this site you can do that yourself or you can just pick up one of our papers. It is all good stuff so it doesn’t need me to be a walking advertisement.

I leave you now with another quote from a Mike Myers film. Although The Love Guru wasn’t that great, let’s be honest, there was a great lesson to be learned from Myers character Guru Maurice Pitka.

Among some of his ‘teachings’ such as “I speak of Intimacy', or 'Into-Me-I-See” and “B.L.O.W.M.E. - Be loving and open with my emotions” is ‘D.R.A.M.A.’ or ‘Distraction. Regression. Adjustment. Maturation. Action’.

It is a great little acronym and it think it works! There is enough stress and horror in the world. If we all realise how lucky we are and do things with a smile on our face, the better we can all be.
