Scones | Dessertrecipe

by Olivia Foster

SconesThere are not many dishes synonymous with British culture, seeing as most of the food we love has been stolen from other nations.

But if there is one stalwart tradition that the perfect cup of tea has to be accompanied by, then it’s the perfect British scone.

Ingredients for 8-10 scones:

225g self-raising flour

Pinch of salt

55g butter

25g caster sugar

150ml milk

2tsp of natural yogurt

The zest of a lemon

Strawberries to decorate

Instructions

- Preheat your oven to gas mark seven, lightly grease a baking sheet and put to one side.

- Mix together the flour and salt and then gently rub in the butter.

You can also add dried fruit such as cherries or sultanas at this stage if you like

- Add the sugar, milk, yoghurt and lemon zest to the mix, stir and then pull the dough together with your hands.

- Lightly knead the dough, then use a cutter or your hands to cut or form the scones into shape and place on the baking tray.

- Slice the strawberries and place a thin slice on top of each scone to decorate.

- Brush the tops of the scones with milk and bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes.
