Good news at last

by Katarzyna Jachec

It’s official. After years of speculation the British nation and people around the globe were amazed as it was announced that Prince William and Kate Middleton were engaged and are to get married next year in London. Congratulations and best wishes have been coming from all over the world, alongside questions whether Kate is an appropriate person to become the wife of a future King of England.

Without a doubt, most of us are curious about the future royal wedding. Fairy tale dress, splendid pageant, high profile guests and, for Kate, access to the “better world”. She is already in a very good position, as she has been fully accepted by the royal family and has never been involved in any press scandal. However, the media are persistently trying to find similarities between her and Princess Diana. Newsweek wrote: “She looks good on camera, there is no known scandal in her background, and she has never acquired a serious profession.” She is now wearing an incredibly beautiful and distinctive sapphire and diamond engagement ring, which once belonged to Prince William’s mother, Princess Diana.

With all the royal treatment their love has also been through ups and down. They met while studying at the University of St Andrews and shared a flat with friends for four years. They became a couple in 2005 after spending a skiing holiday together in Switzerland. Two years later their break up made all the press and media headlines. Everyone speculated about the reasons for the split. Last week, as they made their first television appearance together, William finally explained that they were young and had needed some time apart.

After the romantic engagement in Kenya the countdown to the wedding has begun. Kate needs to get used to living in the public eye where her every step is going to be followed, analysed and ruthlessly criticised. For us students, royal revelations are a dreamy escape from the gloomy reality. Probably for another year we will be bombarded with the news about the wedding preparations and on that day we will all hold our breath with a bit of jealousy wishing them happy ending. Hopefully, Kate and William’s future fairytale wedding will grow into a fairytale life.
