Harold Tillman, chairman of the British Fashion Council and alumni of University of Arts London began the opening ceremony with a touching tribute to the iconic British designer who died last week, after committing suicide.

Tillman described in his speech that McQueen’s impact in the fashion industry was extraordinary and that he’d be sorely missed.

He said: “I know that you will all remember Lee’s life his incredible achievements and what he did for fashion here in London. He proved that this industry and this city, is one of opportunity.

“He has inspired so many to set up their own collections and has influenced many designers to insure London is home city as it continues to grow, as a global fashion centre will be a fitting tribute to this great man.”

Memorial wall

Wall of tributes to McQueen, with cards pinned to the wallA memorial wall was also put up in the centre of Somerset House for people to post messages for the much-loved designer.

One message read: “Your shows inspire the work I do. You are a true creative genius and one of the reasons why Britain is what it is. I cherish the one item that I have. Zoë.”

Another touching message from Sarah Mower, journalist for US Vogue and ambassador for the British Fashion Council said: “Alexander McQueen’s unique creativity turned unforgettable images at the mind’s eye of fashion.

"He conjured unbelievably theatrical feats on his runway. Disturbing, beautiful, provocative- an incomparable sensationalist who made the impossible happen for his audience.

“His genius as a cutter was miraculous to watch in action and the results produced unmistakeable looks recognised around the world. His tragic loss will be an unimaginable blow to his sisters who he adored.”

Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s wife Sarah Brown, who opened the ceremony, highly praised young designers who were shaping the future of UK fashion: “I am uplifted by their passion and fearless determination. Fashion has taken its place as one of the most dynamic parts of the creative economy," she said.

London Fashion Week, which opened today, will feature hundreds of designers’ work on display with catwalk shows and exhibitions both in and around Somerset House.

Many designers will also be live-streaming their shows on the internet, with Burberry streaming their show live in 3D, the first of its kind.
