An Education | DVD review

by Fernando Augusto Pacheco

The film cover of An EducationBased on the memoir written by journalist Lynn Barber, the coming-of-age story of An Education deserves all the praise that it’s receiving, including eight Bafta nominations, putting it on a par with Avatar.

It’s femal star Carey Mulligan has been nominated for best actress.

Mulligan, who also has a lead role in Brothers, released last month, plays Jenny, a teenage girl in the ’60s who gets involved with an older man, transforming her dull suburban life with her parents in London into a life full of excitement and glamour.

Young love

Jenny’s plan to study at Oxford is pushed to the side as she plans her marriage to lover David (Peter Sarsgaard).

The dream ends when she discovers he’s already married.

Mulligan is a revelation and brings soul to the film.

Her sweet and subtle style of acting makes An Education compelling viewing.

It’s a bright and lovely British film that makes you want to go back in time to your teenage years and travel to Paris.

In a memorable last line, Jenny says: “One of the boys I dated, and they were boys, suggested that we go to Paris and I said I’d always wanted to see Paris.

"As if I’d never been.”

An Education will be available to buy on dvd from March 8 this year.
